The Chuetsu Organization for a Safe and Secure Society

Web site >>

June 2006, after the Chuetsu Earthquake in October 2004, this society was established as an industry-government-academic group. The main activities are revitalizing the local community, recording and sharing experiences from the earthquake, promoting local community and industries, as well as deepening research activities related to earthquake disaster with an academic consortium. The society also holds a lecture course, the Disaster Prevention and Safety for Citizens, as well as leading and teaching the local administrative offices in order to promote disaster prevention knowledge
The immediate and important tasks are; collecting and storing data related to the disasters as an archive of digital data in order to share the unforgettable historical events, constructing memorial sites, training local supporters to create sustainable communities in mid-mountainous areas, and forming cooperation networks with not only domestically afflicted areas but also with other countries. The society is aiming to become a base of local revitalization and a comprehensive and educational organization for disaster prevention in the local area.

It was established in January 2008 in order to open up a new academic field “disaster recovery and revitalization”. The society consists of variety of member groups such as legal and administrative relations, monetary-fiscal, local administrative, urban planning, socio-historical, insurance, medical and healthcare, architecture, media, consultant, including NPO’s and NGO’s.
Japan experienced a lot of disasters, such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, typhoons, tornadoes, heavy snowfall or land slides. The society is trying to institutionalize lessons from disasters and to reconsider social and population distortion.
The society consists of three committees to run the organization and another three research groups – Recovery and Revitalization Design, Recovery and Revitalization Law System, Disaster Report – are also active.

Niigata University Research Centre for Natural Hazard and Disaster Recovery

Web site >>

The centre was established in April 2004, after combining with the Snowy Region Disaster Research Centre and Recovery and Revitalization Science Core Centre in Niigata University. The centre is academically and multilaterally researching how disaster prevention and mitigation countermeasures against natural hazard should be carried out, especially in the mid-mountainous areas. Concrete proposals depending on the research results contribute to the local society as well as providing a new academic field by uniting disaster, recovery and revitalization-related studies.
The centre, at the moment, consists of four measure structures – community safety, local industry, disaster prevention and information communication, with members from natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. The centre also provides public lectures and seminars as well as publishing the research data relating to various disasters.
